Speaker expect for the end of Bangaladesh turmoil

New Delhi  : Expressing concern over the rebellion in Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) in Dhaka, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Wednesday said he was hopeful that the matter would be resolved peacefully soon.

"I just came back. I thought the situation (in Bangladesh) was very peaceful and they are all very optimistic about… their stabilised democracy there. I don’t know what has happened….but I am sure democracy will triumph," Chatterjee, who returned yesterday from a short trip to Bangladesh, told reporters here.

A rebellion broke out in the paramilitary Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) Headquarters in Pilkhana area on Wednesday morning and army was called out to quell the revolt, Bangladesh media reported. Apparently angry over a pay dispute, BDR soldiers opened fire on their officers, they said.

When asked if the rebellion could affect West Bengal which shares a long border with Bangladesh, Chatterjee said, "I am sure if any attempt at intrusion into West Bengal is considered by …is thought of by anybody there….I am sure they will not succeed."
