Srinagar, June 22 (Scoop News) — The Speaker, Lok Sabha of India, Ms Meira Kumar on Tuesday assured that Kashmiri version of the day to day proceedings of Parliament would be initiated as soon as the qualified interpreters become available.
Ms Meira Kumar was responding to query of a journalist during her press conference at J&K Legislative Complex after conclusion of the 75th All India Presiding Officer’s Conference here today.
When asked why translation of Parliamentary business in Kashmiri is not being undertaken despite Kashmiri language existing in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution, Ms. Meira Kumar said that it was due to non-availability of qualified Kashmiri Interpreters and assured that as soon as suitable hands become available the process would be started.
Ms. Meira Kumar gave a chronological account of the proceedings of the 2-day All India Presiding Officer’s Conference and said that the conference deliberated on the issues related to ‘Significance of the Committee system in Parliament and the need to Strengthen it’ and ‘Growing Tendency to disrupt the Question Hour and the Need to check it’.
She said the Conference passed a resolution that “all legislatures in India may adopt a uniform Committees system” for securing accountability of the Executive to the Legislatures through in-depth scrutiny of budget, monitoring and review of performance of the Ministries and departments of Government.
Lok Sabha Speaker said that Conference also decided to constitute a Committee of Presiding Officers to look into the problem of disruption of Question Hour, which may also suggest an effective solution to this problem. The Deputy Chairman, Rajya Sabha K. Rehman Khan will be the Chairman of the Committee. The other members of the Committee will be Speaker, Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Speaker, Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Wanglin Lowangdong, Speaker, Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha, Dharam Lal Kaushik, Speaker, Gujarat Legislative Assembly, Ashok Chandulal Bhatt, Speaker J&K Legislative Assembly, Mohammad Akbar Lone, Speaker Rajasthan Vidhan Sabha, Deependra Singh Shekhawat and Speaker, Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly, Sukhdeo Rajbhar. “I will request the Chairman of the Committee to examine the subject matter in detail and suggest the remedial measures at the earliest”, she said.
Ms. Meira Kumar highly appreciated the functionaries of the J&K Legislature and the Government for extending generous hospitality to the participants including Presiding Officers and Principal Sectaries and Secretaries of the Legislative Bodies of the country adding that holding of the Presiding Officer’s Conference after a gap of 23 years in breathtaking environs of the Srinagar city is indeed a memorable event for all. She also appreciated the knowledge and wisdom of the Kashmiri youth and referred to the talent and potential shown by Dr. Shah Faisal during the recent IAS exams.
She also lauded the Press for highlighting the proceedings of the conference appropriately adding that the press in Jammu and Kashmir discharge its duty nicely despite working in difficult conditions.
