In yet another case in Orissa, a farmer named Chappan Harijan committed suicide due to burden of debt. For few years, the number of suicides in farmers is on the rise. Chappan, a farmer from Nuapada of Orissa, had taken loans under various schemes from banks and micro-finance organizations but after the unexpected loss in crops, he was unable to repay it. Disappointed, he tried to commit suicide by consuming pesticides but later he was shifted to hospital. As his condition became serious, he breathed his last on 10th March 2011.
