“Sports provide ample opportunity to young persons to imbibe the team spirit, discipline, coordination and zest for achieving the goal”, he said and called for participation of young boys and girls of the State in sports of all kinds.
Speaking at the prize giving function on the conclusion of 59th All India Police Wrestling, Weightlifting, Judo, Boxing and Gymnastics Championships which concluded here this afternoon, he said athletics, and non-traditional sports should also be focused for promotion besides cricket, football and hockey.
Omar said stressed on striving for attaining medal winning position in the events of athletics, swimming, shooting etc at the global level.
The Chief Minister appreciated the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department for encouraging sports activities in the State. “It is praise worthy that you despite difficult nature of service give due attention to the promotion of sports and participate in the National and International events”, he said.
Chief Minister congratulated the participants saying “winning is not as important as taking part in the event. I greet you for representing your States in the championship and brining laurels to the police departments of your states”, he told the participating players.
The Chief Minister gave away trophies and individuals prizes to the winning teams and outstanding sports persons on the occasion.
As many as, 1550 sports persons including 219 women players from 26 States and 5 Central Police Organizations participated in the Championship.
The Director General Police, Kuldeep Khuda, Additional Director General Police K. Rajendra and others also spoke on the occasion.
