After the truncation of CPM in particular and Left Front in general in the Parliamentary Elections-2009, political killings are on the rise and Mamata Banerjee of Trinomul Congress (TMC) is as usual blaming CPM for killing TMC activists. Sensing a victory in the next assembly elections in 2011, both the TMC and Congress activist have started engaging CPM all over the Bengal, resulting in the present spree of political clashes with obvious effect.
On Thursday (30th July’09), the Union home minister P.Chidambaram remarked that many districts of Bengal have become killing fields and this has to stop. West Midnapore district, which is the hardest hit, the documented casualty figure is 22 including a number of CPM activist killed by the Maoist. In fact most of the lives are lost in the battle for regaining lost turf by both the political combines. The left and opposition are after each other wherever they are stronger.
The total loss of life has been at least 66 as per a local daily ‘The Telegraph’, which published (on 3rd Aug’09) a break up of life lost in various districts. The leader of opposition Partho Chatterjee of TMC said in the assembly, “Terror is being spread across the state by the CPM.”
CPM State Secretary Biman Bose claimed on 2nd Aug’09 that since the declaration of Parliamentary elections in February this year, 72 party activists have been killed in the clashes unleashed by the opposition.
Political observers feel that the clashes are likely to increase as the opposition sees the 2011 assembly elections as last chance for dethroning the Left and the CPM in Bengal after a long spell of 34 years. The Left Front thrashed badly in the parliamentary elections is trying hard to regain the lost turf. It is worthwhile to mention that the Left Front won only 103 assembly segments out of 294 in the parliamentary polls and observers feel that the 2011 assembly polls are likely to give a mortal blow to the Left Front, particularly CPM if the party fails to regain at least a part of the lost ground.
Trinomul Congress, led by the fire brand Mamata Banerjee, is out to create a mass hysteria against the ruling party before the assembly polls, so that she too can become chief minister in line with other women politician of her times, viz, Rabri Devi, Jayalalitha, Sheila Dixit, Sushma Swaraj, Vasundhara Sindhia etc.
Hence all the political clashes.
