Sri Lanka’s army says fierce fighting between troops and Tamil guerrillas has left scores more dead around the last rebel enclave.
Udaya Nanayakkara said about 100 rebels have been killed since Friday.But he said till now only about 50 bodies have been found.
The army’s Web site said Sunday that troops suffered casualties in three clashes.
The army has pushed the Tamil Tigers into a tiny territory on the northeastern coast and says it is close to victory in the island’s 25-year civil war.
Up to 200,000 civilians are also trapped in the war zone, and the U.N. says thousands have been killed or wounded.
