Sri Lankan Health Ministry is considering the possibility of adapting the Cyprus method of preventing the spreading of Thalassemia Disease by asking the couples who are vulnerable of getting the Disease to face a Blood Test and produce a Health Certificatte about their Thalasemia Status Health Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva said today at a Media Semianar On Thalassemia.
Cyprus is succes with controlling the spreading of Thalassemia Disease in this way Minister stressed.
Currently there are around 2000 Thalassemia Patients in Sri Lanka and 5 Percent of the Local Annual Health Budget is allocated for treating them he added.Around 80 Thalassemiac Infants are born every year in Sri Lanka and around 160 Marriages of Higher Risk for these Births which are among the Blood Relatives take place here annually Sri Lankan Doctors said.
