The two Government Medical Colleges at Srinagar and Jammu are being upgraded to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) with the central assistance. With this Jammu and Kashmir State would become first state in the country where medicare facilities to the level of AIIMS would be available. For the purpose, over Rs. 240 crore at the rate of Rs. 120 crore for each medical college with the state equity of Rs. 20 crore have been earmarked for the colleges.
The upgradation work of Jammu Medical College has been started and a 4-storied 220 bedded super speciality hospital block with 15 super specialities is coming up.
The upgradation work of Srinagar Medical College has also been taken up to create 9 super specialities.
Rs. 86 crore have already been released for civil works for both the colleges while as machinery and equipment costing Rs. 97 crore are being provided to the colleges soon. Out of state equity of Rs. 40 crore, Additional Emergency Block of Jammu Medical College has been completed and repairs and renovation of existing Government Medical College complex taken up in hand. While as, 95 per cent work on 30 bedded Paediatric Surgery Ward at SMGS hospital has been completed and the Nursing College at Government Medical College Srinagar is being completed by this September end.
