29th October 2012: As per a recent clinical investigative study it has been found that the individuals suffering from type 2 diabetes and taking the aid of statins are associated with a lower risk of mortality as compared to the ones taking the non-statin drugs.
The study was carried out by a research group that was lead by Vilmundur Gudnason of University of Iceland with the aim to evaluate the role of statin medications in mitigating the death risk in people suffering from the detrimental type2 diabetes condition.
The group enrolled in the study was around 5,152 diabetic patients including both male and female with the age of the participants ranging from 66 – 96 years.
The results proved that the patients taking the aid of the statins were at a 50% less risk of dying from a heart allied disease complication as compared to those who have not taken the statin medications in their lifetime.
Also, it has been found that the participants taking the statins were around 53% less risk of undergoing death due to any other serious clinical illness.
The researchers claimed that the results call for an urgent large population research and comparative study to prove the significant role of statins in lowering the death risk in type 2 afflicted diabetic patients.
Whereas, the results showed that the diabetic patients who consume the drugs statins had the same risk of mortality as compared to the general population.
