Heidi Krieger had never thought in her life that the glory of winning medal after medal in the shot put for her country would let her to a sex-change operation. The lady athlete who used to be the world’s top athletes in 1980s now sneers at the awards, and dismisses them as "doping medals" that turned her into him.
The female Heidi Krieger, now male Andreas Krieger, told CNN during an interview that her coaches fed her so many a steady regimen of steroids (performance-enhancing drugs) that she began to change physically and emotionally. Her hormones were so changed due to the drugs that she starting morphing into a man.
Krieger was quoted as saying: "I felt much more attracted to women and just felt like a man. But I knew I was not lesbian."
Krieger also told CNN that while she was fed the steroids, her coaches told her that these are the vitamins that would enhance her performance, but alas she never knew the drastic result of it.
Now married and running an army surplus store, Krieger tells that he has now taken his life into his own hands and would not like to be seen as a victim.
According to CNN, it is estimated that East Germany used to have as many as 10,000 athletes on steroids at the time of its sporting heyday.
