Steve Smith and Ken Lucas, two players on the Carolina Panthers football team, got into a fight on the sidelines during a practice at training camp today.
Wide receiver Steve Smith was sent home from camp after he punched cornerback Ken Lucas in the face during the scuffle. Sources aren’t sure what started the fight, but the fracas broke out on the sidelines while the rest of the team was practicing. Ken Lucas was taken off of the field in a motorized cart, holding an icepack to his eye. The Carolina Panthers have not released any information on whether Steve Smith, the team’s leading receiver, will be suspended or punished for the incident.
"Obviously everybody is going to be waiting to see what the repercussions are from this event," Panthers receiver Muhsin Muhammad said. "I’m just praying that we rally together as a team, because obviously there’s going to be some adversity here. The focus is not where it needs to be right now."
Steve Smith has had his share of violent outbursts. In 2002 he was suspended for one game after punching a teammate while watching film. Ken Lucas’ medical condition and the timeline for Steve Smith’s return to training camp are unknown.
