Student Arrested for Threat e-Mail to BJP Leader L.K.Advani

Mominul Haque, a third year student of Shillong Law College, was arrested on the early morning of 25th Sept’08, from the laban area of the Meghalaya capital on charges of issuing death threat on e-mail in the name of Indian Muzahideen, to the leader of opposition in the lower house of Indian Parliament and BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Lal Krishna Advani.

Issued in the name of one Ali Hussain Badr, a self-styled field commander of Indian Muzahideen, the e-mail said that the Indian Muzahideen has already convened a meeting of its field commanders to ’accomplish the mission by suicide bombers’

Issued on the eve of visit of Shillong by Sri L.K.Advani on 29th Sept’08, the e-mail was sent to a newspaper last night (24th Sept.) sparking an immediate alert in the security system of the state.

Police traced the particular Internet Protocol (IP) to a cyber cafe in laban and further investigation as to who was using the IP at that time, led to the arrest of the student. Under sustained interrogation for several hours, Mominul Haque broke down and confessed the crime but said that he did this ‘out of anger over persecution of minority community’ across the country.

However police is investigating further to find out whether Haque has any link with any of the terrorist groups operating in or out of the country.

Reacting to the incident, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr.Donkupar Roy said, “We are verifying the matter. The government will ensure a safe visit for Mr.Advani.”
