Supporters of two rebel candidates have been continuing separate movements demanding cancellation of the BNP nomination to former MP GM Fazlul Haque in Chandpur-3 (Sadar-Haimchar) constituency.
Supporters of BNP leader Mahbubur Rahman Shahin, who was denied nomination, put up barricade on Chadnpur-Comilla Highway from 10.30 am to 11 am putting on fire tyres and effigy of GM Fazlul Haque. As a result communication of Dhaka, Chittagong and Comilla with Chandpur got snapped and hundreds of vehicles were stranded. However, as police appeared in the scene the agitators left.
District Chhatra Dal leader Ibrahim Quazi Jewel said, they would continue the movement till the nomination is cancelled.
The supporters of BNP leader Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, another aspirant who did not get ticket, at about 11.30 am Sunday put the party office at JM Sengupta Road in the town under lock and key in presence of police. They also burnt the effigy of BNP nominated candidate GM Fazlul Haque. The agitators lay on the road demanding replacement of GM Fazlul Haque by Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik.
District Sechchasevak Dal general secretary Jahangir Hossain Khan said, only Manik provided them all types of help in the bad days of the party. So they would not accept nomination to anybody except Manik in the seat.
