As reported earlier on 18th June’08 by this reporter, the Delhi IIT expelled 12 Scheduled Caste students (SC) on the ground of poor performance while the expelled SC students complained of caste based discrimination by the authority. After the intervention of Mr. Buta Singh, the Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes, a review was made and three of the expelled SC students were readmitted.
However, the affected SC students including some general students, who were expelled too, moved Supreme Court on the matter. The Supreme Court in its interim order dated 5th Jan’09 asked IIT Delhi to readmit all the expelled students including 9 SC students.
The Delhi IIT, however allowed the expelled students to submit their fees, but did not allow them to resume classes and said that they (IIT) were petitioning against the order of the court and the student would have to wait until 23rd January’09.
On 23rd Jan’09, the Supreme Court reprimanded the IIT authorities and told them to readmit the expelled students immediately or face possibility of contempt of court proceedings.
This is for the first time that any of the IITs had to readmit expelled students after intervention by the court.
