Balakot: The morning of the 8th October 2005 brought havoc on the people of Balakot and Azad Kashmir when deadly earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale jolted the north eastern parts of Pakistan and within seconds thousands of people either killed or left homeless in the far-flung areas of the country.
The disaster killed more than 80,000 people, numerous suffered injuries, destroyed the houses, roads and the life totally paralysed in the region.
Relief agencies, NGO’s, volunteers and rescue workers from all over the world rushed to the disaster-hit areas and undertook the difficult task of relief soon after that, moreover, in the beginning tent villages were established to rehabilitate the survivors.
Now on the 3rd anniversary of the earthquake the disappointment and fear looming on the faces of survivors and they are looking at the sky gods to cope with another harsh winter season which may compound their hardships and these ill-fated victims can only dream of the facilities like washrooms, clean drinking water, schools, hospitals and still a dire need of rehabilitation remains a fact in the region.
The 3rd anniversary of this disaster is being observed today and the people are remembering their beloved ones, they lost in the earthquake.
Rallies, symposiums and seminars are held in the cities of Kotli, Mirpur and other parts of Azad Kashmir besides Islamabad and main cities of Pakistan and special prayers were offered for the deceased ones and on different occasions food was also distributed among the needy and poor.
