Tajikistan’s hope of winning gold medal in the light heavyweight division were shattered while its boxer named Dzhakhon Kurbanov was disqualified from competing ahead in the game for sinking his teeth into his Kazakhstani opponent during their quarterfinal fight at the Workers Indoor Arena.
Due to the incident, the referee had to stop the match with seventeen seconds remaining in the third round of the quarterfinal bout between Kurbanov and Yerkebulan Shynaliyev.
It was reported that Kurbanov had bitten Shynaliyev so hard on the shoulder that it started bleeding, and made Shynaliyev irately show his shoulder to the referee, who, on being prompted, halted the fight, disqualified Kurbanov and declared him the winner of the match. Kurbano had previously drawn the ire of his foe for shoving and holding.
Previous to this outrage, the most well-known "bite" in boxing history was the one ex- world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson put on Evander Holyfield in their June 1997 rematch. Now, however, Tajik Boxer has added one more to the list of pugilists who saw fit to bite their foe while losing.
Here I wonder, did the boxers hug after the bout? Did Kurbanov kiss his opponent? Perhaps this was the Tajikistan way of saying "Nice fight."?
