Tamara Hoover, a former Texas art teacher and Carmen Kontur Gronquist, a former Oregonian mayor, are two of 12 people featured in a PC World Magazine article about how posting pictures to the internet can lead to trouble. It brings up the constant issue of internet privacy and personal freedoms.
Tamara Hoover, 31, was fired from her position as an art teacher at an Austin, Texas High School when topless pictures of her surfaced on the internet. School administrators were not pleased when the saw the photos of Hoover nude wearing a spiked collar. Hoover defended herself by claiming the photos of her were artistic expression and that they were not "prominently displayed" online.
Carmen Kontur Gronquist was the mayor of tiny Arlington, Oregon before some sexy photos on MySpace led to her removal from office. Gronquist had the photos taken before she was mayor for a fitness contest. The photos went public when one of her friends posted them to MySpace trying to improve Ms. Gronquist’s personal life. Her political opponents called for her to be removed from office after seeing the photos and, in a special election, she lost her seat.
PC World’s article features 10 other unfortunate people whose internet reputation cost them dearly. My personal favorite is the story of Kevin Colvin. The bank intern told his boss he had to go home for a family emergency on October 31, 2007. When pictures surfaced of him at a halloween party, his boss sent the photo to everyone in the office and Kevin lost his job.
