The recent price hike of fuels announced by the Central Government, imposed a heavy increase of Rs 50/- for gas cylinder, which is considered very heavy as far as middle class as well as below the middle class is concerned.
However, there has been an outcry among the people especially among the ladies against the unprecedented price rise in gas.
The outcry was also reflected in the statewide women’s conference held at Cuddalore on 14 th and 15 th of June, 2008.
Bowing to the pressure from several quarters, the latest from the women’s conference in seession at Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr.M.Karunanithi on Sunday announced a cut of Rs 30/- out of Rs 50/-in the cost of cylinder of LPG.
However the relief would be available to only to those people who have a single cylinder and not to double cylinders.
The relief would benefit 50 lakh poor and middle class families in Tamil Nadu, which will cost an additional burden of Rs 100 crore per annum to the state’s exchequer and it would be paid directly to the petroleum companies.
It is relevant to mention here that the Andhra Pradesh government has cancelled the entire price hike on gas cylinder, benefiting the poor people.
