Taslima’s case isno different from Salman Rushdie’s. the refuge to him was provided by England with its intellectual traditions and intellectual pretensions. They did not impose any conditions. yet, his creativity did suffer a bit. the artist that he is, he purged himself of all toxic elements in the system by writing a fantasy novel for kids. Taslima , unfortunately, lives and operates too near ground reality levels. She draws heavily on contemporary events for her matrial. A mistake better avoided. I heard about a beautiful satire piece in Orion. it touches on global warming, but ever so elegantly.about the other issue, history is on taslima’s side, and India has provided refuge to the socalled infidels down the ages. The people of the book are relentless in their pursuit of rebels and renegades, or who they perceive to be so.it is an industry by itself.I have one question for these critics. haven’t they heard of the famous advice—– do unto others as you would be done by. If Icannot tolerate dissent, any form, any reason, why should I expect accommodation from the other side? the ideal arragement, perhaps, is to go back to Roman times . Give unto caesar what is caesar’s due and leave the rest to theGod of your persuasion.
