Jammu: Days are the gone when Jammu was known as city of temples. Unabated loot of temple property and encroachment upon the premises and temples had become routine. In a bizarre episode under the nose of administration and on the back yard concerned department a temple along with its premises was about to get turned into shopping complex. Finally, it was the brave city police which took lead in stopping the on going construction work.

According to reports, taking advantage of widening operation of road by authorities some miscreants under the gang leader of one Bharat Bushan @ Kaku Cheer managed to get signatures of the temple land transferred in the name of said person by forcing priest under the influence of liquor. On the basis of these forged documents, couple of days later, they started construction of shopping mall. Police sources informed that despite being area under another police station still city police took lead and stopped the ongoing construction.

It is important to mention that about 100 year old Shiv Temple situated at Vivekananda Chowk was looted of its valuable belongings couple of years but no body was bothered or concerned. Locals said that they are poor people and afraid of lodging a complaint against goons and land grabbers. They said there were two idols of Shri Nandi Ji, one Naag and several gold, silver ornaments which were looted by unknown looters, they added. Sources further said that being in exercise of sheer violation of master plan; Jammu Municipal Corporation has issued permission for the construction.

When contacted, Minister for Urban Development Mr Nawang Rigzin Jora’s phone replied as switched off. On calling repeatedly to commissioner, who did not bother to response, it was learnt by officials later that commissioner is not picking phone on the off days. Meanwhile, Enforcement Officer Mr Kapil Sharma while reacting upon the issue said that ongoing construction was stayed by court and nobody will be allowed to start work afresh. To a query, he replied that if anybody starts work on stopped project it would amount to question mark upon JMC’s credibility.
