Today terrorists struck the motor convoy of the Ex Pakistani premier, Ms Benazir Bhutto with deadly suicide attacks. Earlier today, she had returned to Pakistan after 8 years of self-exile. She was given a warm welcome by her followers and party members, and was going from the airport to the tomb of Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, in a miles long procession, where she was supposed to deliver a speech.
More than 120 people have reportedly been killed and scroes have been injured. She is stated to have escaped unhurt. She was traveling on top of a float, when the two suicide bombers attempted to get closer to her. In panic they struct a police vechicle and a car just behind the float. The blasts occured seconds apart and were so strong that they ripped the body parts of the victims.
Karachi has a troubled history of violence in recent years, where one of its major ethnic parties, MQM, is usually blamed for its militant ties. Before her arrival, her party had requested the government to provide her strict security measures following death threats by the religious extremist commander Baitullah Mashud, who had promised to greet her with suicide bombers. Bhutto has recently made several pro-west and anti-Taliban statements.
Several world leaders, including UN Secretary General, have condemned the attack.
