Oakland California. The Texas Rangers on Sunday have traded their catcher Geovany Soto, 31, to their American League West Division rival the Oakland Athletics for cash considerations.
Due to injuries to his knee and groin, Soto only played in 10 games for the Rangers in the 2014 Major League Baseball season. Soto will be a free agent at the end of the 2014 regular season. The Rangers did not lose Soto to free agency and not receive anything in return.
The Rangers are not going to make a playoff run this baseball season since they are currently in last place in the American League Western Division.
Soto will be added to the Athletics 40 man roster on Sunday. The Athletics will send first baseman Kyle Blanks who has tendinitis to his left Achilles heel to the 60 day disabled list to make room for Soto on the roster. Blanks will not be eligible to play for the Athletics for the rest of the 2014 baseball season.
Soto will likely be used as a defensive replacement for Athletics catchers John Jaso, Stephen Vogt and Derek Norris or play as the designated hitter with the Athletics for the remainder of the current baseball season.
Soto has a reputation on being one of the best defensive catcher in the Major Leagues. Soto made his debut in the Major Leagues in 2005 with the Chicago Cubs.
The Athletics are the third baseball team that Soto has played for in the Major Leagues.
