The forthcoming boxing match between Juan Manuel Marquez and Juan Diaz will take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas on February 28, 2009
According to Golden Boy Promotions, tickets for this match will go on sale this Friday staring at 10 in the morning, central time. Prices range from $25 to $300
At stake in this fight is the Ring Magazine’s World Lightweight Championship.
Juan Manuel Marquez has been campaigning for another chance to fight Manny Pacquiao now the world’s most popular boxer. Marquez lost to Pacquiao in their recent match
Sometimes last year Juan Manuel Marquez followed Pacquiao to Manila to ask him for a rematch. Instead, Pacquiao fought Oscar de la Hoya in Las Vegas and won by KO.
Realizing that he won’t be able to get a rematch with Pacquiao, Marquez instead decided to square it off with a young but very popular Mexican-American boxer Juan Diaz.
Juan Diaz is an American-Mexican professional boxer who was born in Houston, Texas last September 17, 1983. He started his professional boxing career at age 16 when he fought Rafael Ortiz and won via first round TKO. He won all his succeeding five fights by either KO or TKO. His latest victim was Michael Katsides of Australia when they fought in Houston last September 6, 2008
Juan Diaz’ professional record is 34 fights, 33 wins and one loss with 17 wins via KO. His only loss was with Nate Campbell last March 2008 in Cancun Mexico via split decision.
Juan Manuel Marquez is a Mexican professional boxer. He was born on August 23, 1973 in Mexico City.
Marquez came from a family of boxers. His brother Rafael Marquez is a former world champion who has won world titles at the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisions.
His professional boxing record consists of 54 fights, won 49, lost 4 and winning 36 fights via KO.
Marquez became popular when he last fought with Manny Pacquiao and Cuban boxer Joel Casmayor.
Although he lost to Pacquiao on a controversial decision, he won over Casmayor for the lightweight crown. It was a classic fight that ended in the 11th round KO for the crown.
