The centenary celebrations of Mohun Bagan Athelitic Club’s historic achievement of becoming the first Indian team to win the IFA Shield in 1911 is going on with much fun fare at their Club tent.Mohun Club conferred club’s highest honour ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’ posthumously to ten of the 11 players who defeated British army side East Yorkshire Regiment 2-1 in the title clash July 29, 1911.The victory had boost the morale of the country fighting to gain independence from the British rule.Mohun Bagan was the first Indian club which lifted the IFA shield by defeating a British club.
On 15th august 1889,the Mohun Bagan Mohun Bagan Sporting Club was founded by an eminent lawyer Bhupendranath Basu, who later became the president of Indian National Congress. The first meeting of the club presided by Bhupendranath Basu himself, was held at his residence at 14,Balaram Ghosh Street of North Calcutta. The first ground of the football club was inside the marble palace also in north calcutta,owned by local zamindar Kirti Mitra.
