The Children’s Hospital of Michigan at the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) is among the best in the country in eight pediatric specialties according to the new U.S. News & World Report’s 2015-16 Best Children’s Hospitals rankings. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan is nationally ranked in: Cancer, Cardiology & Heart Surgery, Gastroenterology & GI Surgery, Neurology & Neurosurgery, Nephrology, Orthopedics, Pulmonology, and Urology. The Children’s Hospital of Michigan also received the highest ranking of any pediatric hospital in Michigan for Cancer, Neurology/Neurosurgery, and Nephrology.
The Best Children’s Hospitals rankings highlight U.S. News’ top 50 U.S. pediatric facilities in cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes & endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, neonatology, nephrology, neurology & neurosurgery, orthopedics, pulmonology and urology. Based on a combination of clinical data and reputation surveys of pediatric specialists, 83 hospitals ranked in at least one specialty.
“The Children’s Hospital of Michigan is consistently recognized as one of America’s best hospitals for children which exemplifies the commitment of our entire health care team to patient quality, safety, innovations and research for the children and families we serve,” said the Children’s Hospital of Michigan CEO Larry Gold. “There are only a handful of children’s hospitals like ours across the country that provide a full range of advanced services and specialties designed especially for kids. We’re honored to be recognized for the unique role we play in caring for the health and well being of children and their families.”
U.S. News introduced the Best Children’s Hospitals rankings in 2007 to help families of children with rare or life-threatening illnesses find the best medical care available. The rankings open the door to an array of detailed information about each hospital’s performance.
“This national recognition reflects our commitment to bring the very best, compassionately delivered and quality-driven medical care to children and their loved ones in this community and to all the patients we serve from around the world,” said the Children’s Hospital of Michigan’s Pediatrician-in-Chief and Wayne State University School of Medicine Chair of Pediatrics Steven E. Lipshultz, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.A.H.A. “This affirms the expertise of the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in providing advanced patient care to some of the most seriously ill and medically complex children, who often have rare illnesses from before birth to young adulthood.”
“Our work is not done,” Lipshultz added. “We drive toward excellence every single day and constantly seek to improve.”
Most of each hospital’s score relied on patient outcomes and care-related resources. U.S. News garnered clinical data from a detailed questionnaire sent to 184 pediatric hospitals. A sixth of the score came from annual surveys of pediatric specialists and subspecialists in each specialty in 2013, 2014 and 2015. They were asked where they would send the sickest children in their specialty, setting aside considerations of location and expense.
“To be recognized on this elite list as one of the best children’s hospitals in the nation is a great honor for the Children’s Hospital of Michigan,” said DMC Chief Executive Officer Joe Mullany. “At the DMC, our physicians, nurses, and staff are dedicated to providing the highest quality of care to all our pediatric patients and their families.”
“The pediatric centers that are ranked in Best Children’s Hospitals deserve our congratulations,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “Children with life-threatening or rare conditions need the kind of care that these hospitals deliver day after day.”
Survival rates, adequacy of nurse staffing, procedure volume and much more can be viewed on http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/pediatric-rankings and will be published in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2016” guidebook, which will be available September 1.
