The Commonwealth of Nations, a British Colonial legacy, has proposed to review the suspension of Pakistan from the august body.It is well known that Pakistan was suspended from the Commonwealth of Nations, a year ago, in the wake of the imposition of emergency in Pakistan by General Parvesh Musharaf. Now emergency has been lifted and a democratic government has been installed in power after a general election was held on February, 18 th to the National Assembly of Pakistan.
The Commonwealth Ministerial Action group will meet in London on May 12 th, to discuss the re-entry of Pakistan to the 53 Nation grouping from which it was suspended following the imposition of emergency in Pakistan by Musharaf.
The General Secretary of the Commonwealth Mr.Kamalesh Sharma, before embarking upon a tour to visit Uganda, had told a British Daily that he was optimistic that Pakistan could soon be readmitted in to the Commonwealth.
Pakistan was suspended from the councils of the Commonwealth on November, 22, 2007, after the imposition of emergency in Pakistan.At that time it was also agreed to review it when elections are held in Pakistan.
Therefore, as agreed to, the Commonwealth of Nations has been observing the progress of Pakistan towards democracy and so it has agreed to review its suspension and readmitting Pakistan into the Commonwealth of Nations.
