Typically Chalukyan
The eastern Chalukyas of Vengi have built a few structural temples in sandstone which fall into two groups. The earlier one comprises temples called Kaansaragudi and Nakkalagudi akin to the Pallava type, built perhaps in the time of Gunaga Vijayaditya (AD 848- 891) and his successors. The other three temples- the Colingesvara, the Chandrasekhara and the Rajarajeswara –belong to a later group (AD 950 -1050). These temples have a typically Chalukyan plinth form a narrow ardhamandapa in the front and the sculptures are all Saivite.
Guntappalli is a village 44.8 km from the Ellore railway station. The hill near the village, with its two scraps projected in the form of a horseshoe overlooking a narrow ravine, has numerous Buddhist remains, both structural and rock –cut.
The chaityagriha situated on a high terrace is approached from the west by a long flight of steps. In front of the flight of the steps are more than thirty stupas of varying sizes. Of special importance are the rock- cut caves in two groups at two different heights. The caves have a charm of their own in their austere simplicity and their uncommon forms.
