Today, 12 May, marks the first anniversary of the 8.0 magnitude Sichuan earthquake. A year has passed but many wounds are still open and many lives remain shattered. Tens of thousands of victims still live in temporary shelters, and tens of thousands of children still do not have a school to go to.
That’s why my university, HKUST, has decided to launch the Sichuan Earthquake Charity Fundraising campaign to turn their needs into calls for action. All funds collected will be used for the rebuilding of schools and shelters for the victims. Please give generously. Every dollar helps.
On Tuesday May 12 at precisely 2:28 p.m. the time the earthquake struck, a bell rang. At that moment, we, all students and staff observed a minute of silence to honor those who died in the disaster.
We the living and the privileged must do something for the survivors and the sufferers.
For the victims’ sake, please open your hearts and your wallets.
