The first ceremony of World Press Freedom Day was held today at the Green Elephant restaurant in Mandalay, Myanmar. A local group of free press activists organized that ceremony for the sake of more genuine rights of free expression.
A senior journalist and a leading free press activist, U Win Tin sent a video message to the ceremony. In his 18-minute-long message, he highlights the importance of free expression in establishing a new democratic nation. He also points out that journalists must be aware of ethical and political falsehood in profession of journalists standing on the side of the truth.
Over 50 participants including writers, poets,journalists, photojournalists, citizen journalists and radio journalists, attended the ceremony to show unity and hope for press freedom. Seven senior journalists, poets and writers expressed their opinions and experiences on lack of freedom in expression.
