"We don’t need reservation in parliament for women.Women win election and enter parliament with their own merit," said Sumita Basu a Banker.Yesterday (March 9) the Rajya Sabha(Upper house of the Indian parliament)passed the Women’s Reservation Bill Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress and main ally of Indian National Congress led UPA government opposing the Bil and the Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) withdrawing support to the UPA Government the future of the Bill seems uncertain.Women’s Reservation Bill seeks to reserve for women a third, or 33 percent of the seats in the Loksabha (House of the People) and all state assemblies. But it doesn’t apply in the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of the Parliament ).Now Loksabha have only 59 members.182 seats out of 545 Loksabha seats will be reservesd for women if the bill is passed in the Loksabha. There is sub-quota within the women’s Reservation Bill which means that out of 182 reserved seats 42 seats will be reserved for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe women.Political parties like RJD and SP demanded sub-quota for the Other Backward Classes(OBCs) and minorities be included in the Women’s Reservation Bill.
