There is nothing to suggest that Amy Elizabeth Thomas is any different from girls her age. An M.Phil student in Mathematics at the University College here, the bubbly bespectacled youngster embraces a passion for something that repulses most others. While most people dread the prospect of coming across a snake, she loves the slithery reptiles.
A member of Zoowatch, Amy is used to handling even the most deadly species such as the cobra and viper. “It is not an acquired skill. She is gifted with the unique talent. Right from childhood, she used to touch and carry snakes whenever she came across one”, says Leela Thampi, vice-president, Zoowatch.
On Friday, Amy demonstrated her skill at the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary where the snakes were brought to be released into the forest. Asked whether her parents approved of her hobby, she shrugged her shoulders.
