"Government of Gorkhaland" replaces Government of West Bengal all over Darjeeling Hills
District Magistrate declares legal actions will be taken against the people involved
DARJEELING:
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s Non Cooperation Movement has now resulted into what is being seen as a major embarrasment to the West Bengal Government. Starting in earnest today, notice boards of all Government offices and Government of West Bengal Undertaking have been re-written – scrapping the word West Bengal to Gorkhaland – resulting in ‘Government of Gorkhaland’. The word ‘West Bengal’ written in most private establishment as an extension of ‘Darjeeling – 734101, West Bengal,’ are now being speedily re-written as ‘Darjeeling – 734101, Gorkhaland’. "There are even suggestions pouring in to change the Pin Code which is that of West Bengal," said a Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leader. Most of the offices under the District Administration has already been brought under the ‘Government of Gorkhaland’ board. However, due to massive police presence, the District Magistrate’s office, Darjeeling District Court and Police Stations have so far remained immune from Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s ‘Government of Gorkhaland’ crusade.
Speaking to the press after the incidents of Gorkha Janmukti Morcha cadres ‘defacing’ Government of West Bengal boards surfaced, District Magistrate, Surendra Gupta said, "We will immediately remove the boards which reads Government of Gorkhaland. Legal actions will be taken against those found guilty. Defacement of Government property is punishable by Public Properties Law Act 1984 and West Bengal Government Act 1973. Besides these, people found guilty can also be booked under Indian Penal Code 121 quoting anti-national activities."
Gorkha Janmukti Morcha leaders have however, vouched that come what may their Non Cooperation Movement will now on only be intensified.
