FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 9, 2014. Surfside Beach, SC, November 6, 2014– Freedom Fidos, one of the Grand Strand’s newest veterans 501(3)c non-profit organizations is having a ribbon cutting ceremony in conjunction with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce. Freedom Fidos is announcing their newly approved 501(3)c tax exempt status with the IRS and membership with the Chamber.
Matt Burgess, founder of Freedom Fidos, said, “We were shocked when the IRS approved our 501(3)c status in three weeks! We were being told to expect to wait six to twelve months for this approval, so you can imagine my surprise when I opened the approval letter. We have Richard Bush, managing partner of Bush Law Group and a Freedom Fidos board member to thank for making this happen so quickly! We would recommend Richard to anyone looking to start a nonprofit organization.”
The ceremony will be held on Veteran’s Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 3pm at Twisters Soft Serve in Murrells Inlet, located at 3968 Business Highway 17, next to the American Legion Post 178, across the street from the Marshwalk.
A demonstration performed by task-trained service dogs will follow the ribbon cutting ceremony. Dog trainers and disabled veterans who have received training from Freedom Fidos will be on hand to meet the public, share their stories and answer any questions. The American Legion Post 178 in Murrells Inlet will be presenting a donation to Freedom Fidos after the ceremony, as well.
Twisters Soft Serve will be offering a free small cone or cup of ice cream to veterans on Veterans Day, along with dogs who always get free ice cream when they visit Twisters with their owners. A portion of the proceeds on Veterans Day will be donated to Freedom Fidos.
“We are huge supporters of animal rescue organizations and feel honored to close out our season this year hosting this event benefiting Freedom Fidos. We are looking forward to working with Matt and his Fidos on future events like this one, when we open up again in Mid-March or April to kick off our summer season next year,” Shelley Schilawski, co-owner of Twisters, said.
About Freedom Fidos
This past June, Freedom Fidos was founded by Matt Burgess, a disabled veteran of the Bosnian conflict and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He realized that a need existed for providing task-trained service dogs to disabled veterans at NO FEE to them. He felt that efforts to fund the care and training of these rescued dogs should come from the providing organization and surrounding communities.
“I think the disabled veteran has enough on his or her plate to have to go out and raise the funds needed to have a service dog. I believe it takes a community to prepare these dogs for our heroes, who have already given us the freedom we enjoy in this country. Now it’s time to give them back their freedom to enjoy life again,” said Matt Burgess, founder of Freedom Fidos.
He also felt that as dogs learn best from each other in their packs, disabled veterans learn how to handle their service dogs best from other disabled veterans, who understand the challenges and limitations associated with some of these disabilities, such as PTSD and traumatic brain injuries.
