The internet has opened up vistas of communication, at the click of a mouse the entire wired world is in our hands or rather on our personal computer screens. The internet is surely a marvelous scientific through dissolving all geographical barriers.
We get all the information we need without having to visit libraries or looking through the heavy volumes of an encyclopedia. We can write to our friends all over the world. We can get in touch with authors or scientists or other great personalities without being formally introduction to them. We can take part in discussions and chat sessions and express our points of view.
However, through much has been said of the virtues of the internet, it is not always possible to make full use of it. Our daily lives are so busy that we often do not have the time to sit at the computer and see what is on menu. Agreed that a huge mountain of knowledge is ready to be downloaded from the net; but then, how much of it do we need to absorb and assimilate, to conduct our day-to-day lives? Very little, I would say.
It is true that an email can be transmitted across thousands of kilometers in a few seconds. Nevertheless, a computer cannot speed up the time taken to compose a letter, which is essentially a function of the human mind. Moreover, it cuts into the time that we should be spending with neighbors and friends. It reduces interpersonal human interaction.
At the same time, it is impossible to ignore the advances in communication. All our travel bookings (trains and flights) food supplies hotel bookings, video shows, examination results and bank (service) accounts are maintained by computer and it would be foolish not to take into account the advantages of the internet.
People who spend hours on the internet no doubt miss out on all the other interesting activities of life. They find everything including music and sports on the box, and there is very little urge in them to go out and play a game or listen to a live concert.
