The Obamas flew to New York City yesterday for dinner and a show, a long awaited promise President Obama had made to his wife Michelle. In a statement made to the press, Obama said "I am taking my wife to New York City because I promised her during the campaign that I would take her to a Broadway show after it was all finished."
The Obamas first stop was a pre-theater dinner at James Beard award winning chef Dan Barber’s restaurant, Blue HIll in the West Village neighborhood of NYC. The secret service blocked off Washington Place and crowds gathered to cheer on the presidential couple. Blue Hill was a fine choice for the Obamas, as chef Dan Barber is one of the premier forerunners on promoting sustainable and locally sourced ingredients in his restaurant. The restaurants meal is very seasonal and features produce from his farm in the Hudson Valley.
After dinner, the Obamas caught a performance of "Joe Turner’s Come and Gone," a play about black America in the early 1900s.
The day trip to New York caused some controversy among the Republican party, who stated that such an extravagance was not in line with the economic hardships the country is facing at this time.
Isn’t everyone allowed a break once in a while? Including the President?
