Seemingly of many forms, religion is in reality uniformly believed and practiced in the village and is a unifying and integrating force in the life of the community. The scriptures of the various faiths notwithstanding, belief in Dharma and karma as well as a non- scientific cosmology and magic practice is shared by all.
like the rest India, Karnataka has a history of successive dynastic which left their important on the art and culture of the land. The genesis of south Indian temple architecture can be seen at Aihole, once the capital of the great Chalukyas, and today a small sleepy village. Aihole, Badami and Pattadakal were apparently places of frenzied artistic activity between AD 6th and 8th century when the influence of the Guptas was parenting the south.
The oldest temple in Aihole is probably the Ladh Khan. It consists of a low, flat roofed, squire building with a protruding pillared porch on one side and is an obvious stone adaptation from the ancient texts. Flanking the entrance are river goddesses, while the walls are decorated with mithuna mofits. The skill of the early Chalukyan sculpture can be see in the figures of Seshasayi, Haragauri and Brahma, from the Huchchappaiyagudi temple, now preserved in the prince of Wales Museum in Mumbai.
