The art and crafts of Gujarat are famous: The patola sari of Patan with its exquisite weaving designs; silk and silk weaving of Surat; bandhni and chundri (tie-and dye) of Jamnagar; small mirror work on skirts and blouses in Saurashtra; hand printing of sari with wooden blocks in Ahmadabad. Equally well-known have been the lacquer and woodwork of Sankheda and Mahuva.
Ahmadabad is to day next Mumbai in the number of its mills and in the output of its textiles. Textile industries accounted for nearly eighty percent of factory workers in Gujarat in 1960. but as more and more governmental controls on production and prices of cotton textiles were imposed, mill owners began to diversify their activities and started chemical plants and engineering works. In this trend, the discovery of oil and natural gas has been a stimulus. The share non-traditional industries in Gujarat has very nearly doubled during the last ten years.
