Government silk factory
The place is lit by the subtle sheen of silks in jewel-like colors. Mysore is one of the largest silk production centers in India. Its superior quality silk yarn is being used by master weavers of Kanchipuram and Varnasi. Mysore weavers are superb craftsmen, creating delicate motifs in thread and zari on the extremely soft silk they weave. The fascinating process of weaving by hand can also be observed at close quarters. The power looms in the factory spin an incredible hundreds of sarees a day.
Central Sericultural Research and Training Institute
Engaged in the delicate pursuit of breeding the new, improved silkworm and new mulberry varieties, the Institute is a national body offering consultancy services in silkworm rearing and mulberry cultivation. It has succeeded in breeding high -yield silkworm species which give almost twice the quantity of silk per unit weight of cocoons as compared to existing breeds. The Institute also undertakes research into various other aspects of sericulture.
