The president of India is elected by the members of an Electoral college consists of Elected members of both Houses of parliament.Elected members of Legislative Assemblies of states including National capital territory of Delhi and the Union Territory of Pondichary.Nominated members are eligible for vote The total members in the Electoral college in 2007 are 4,896.Upper house 233, lower house 543 state assemblies 4,120total 4896 Value of votes each member of legislative assemblies vote is calculated on the basis of state population divided by 1000 multiply by no. of state MLA’s.Each MPs vote is calculated on the basis of total vote value of all ML A’s divided by total members of parliament =value of one MP’s vote..Quota required to elect resident 5,49,442.In 2007,UPA-Left front nominee Pratibha Patil has won the presidential elections by thumping margin of 3,06,810 vote. Third Front parties and cross voting in favour of some Indian People’s party(BJP) ruled states abstained from voting.
