The race is on.
The P. 212 Sibu Parliamentary seat will be represented by one of the three candidates who filed their nomination at the Sibu Civic Centre yesterday.
Our preoccupation with politics is once again on show.
The world at large, lend me your ears!
Malaysians seems to be eating, drinking and sleeping politics. I guess, generally that is what we are. I do not think there is another country in the world where almost everything is measured in terms of politics.
Now, tell me one area of our life which is not measured in terms of politics.
Education and scholarship; the consensus is that you cannot go to elite institution of learning abroad [read-Oxford, Cambridge, London and even al Azhar] if you are not in anyway connected to an UMNO hotshot. Sarawakians? No way.
Politics even managed to steal the show if one is dead. A member of the Opposition PAS Party will throw up if you think of burying his kin next to a late UMNO member. They cannot even think of lying peacefully in their grave if the body in the next grave is not of his party. No wonder there are so many ghosts making their rounds these days.
While we drown ourselves in the rivers of politics, the candidates who are undeniably the co-stars of this by-election tortured themselves in flesh-pressing exercises.
Babies were kissed even if they have runny noses. Their mothers blushed and fidgeted endlessly when told they are still beautiful at 40. Some were even told they look like Cindy Crawford [do you ever believe this]. Young mothers were also told they look like Britney Spears [of course minus the temper tantrums and rehab episode].
Well, before we bid goodbye for now, the candidates are; Robert Lau Hua Yiew [BN], Wong Ho Leng [DAP] and Narawi Haron [independent].
Once again, in Sibu, hotels were full, so were coffee shops and taxis. Our federal and state members of cabinet did their parts in explaining government policies. Issues were retold and put to rest via a flurry of construction works.
Until we meet again.
