Kathmandu, Nepal, May 8, 2010: Following the peace rally, the strike finally came to an end after six long days of treachery and suffering on Friday evening. The Unified Communist Party of Nepal-Maoist (UCPN-M) standing committee meeting decided to declare the strike to end from the evening after a brief meeting of 3 hrs with its board committee members. According to the party, “Looking at the people’s aspirations, we decided to called off the strike. We respect and honor people’s sentiment and if they want us to stop the strike, we have no problem in calling it off. We have called off the strike but our demonstrations will still continue. We will demonstrate against the malpractices and are still moving forward in our quest. We have just given up the strike for the sake of people and our others programs will further continue. ” The party has decided to protest and encircle Singha Durbar and other government secretariats across the country from Sunday. On Friday thousands of People took it to streets for participating in the peace assembly which turned into the peace rally, despite the threats by Maoist party. Maoist Chairman Puspa Kamal Dahal said, “The strike was called off because the general public were having trouble with their daily lives and apart from that our party was being targeted for public fury where the unwanted groups were manipulating the situation. We surely don’t want to create a bad image of the party as we stand for and by the people.” “Calling off the strike doesn’t mean that we have called off our agendas, we are still in struggle and we will further do our efforts to fulfill people’s aspirations for drafting the people’s constitution,” added Dahal. Similarly, it is reported that Robert O. Blake, Junior Assistant Secretary, Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs issued a statement on Friday, to immediately end the struggle and requested both the parties to negotiate in table talks as it has already caused hardship for the people and further might lead to the possibility of dangerous situations. The statement further highlights the leaders to reach agreement on issues that have impeded the completion of new constitution and the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
