Communication is a very important part in our everyday life. It is a requirement to relay messages with one another. Nowadays, communication is fast, accessible and easy. With the advent of the modern technology such as the mobile phones as well as the communication satellites, it is possible for us to communicate wherever we are in the globe as long as there is a signal in a particular place.
Communication before is quite hard especially in the ancient times where the messenger were used to carry information on distant places.
Modern technology provides this change in communication from the invention of the telegraph, to the telephone and on today’s wireless communication gadgets.
The invention of the telegraph can be considered as one of the foundation of the electronic communication.
It was the British inventor named William Sturgeon that displayed the power of the electro magnet. Sturgeon used a seven-ounce iron piece. He wrapped it with wires which were sent with a current coming from a single battery, this activity was able to lift an object of nine pounds.
Another individual in the name of Joseph Henry, an American, contributes in the development as he was able to use the device made by Sturgeon to be able to send an electronic current over a mile in order to activate an electromagnet which eventually causes a bell to strike. This activity was the beginning of the telegraph used.
The telegraphed was developed by the man named Samuel F.B Morse. Morse is a professor in the New York University in the United States. The telegraphed device functions by using electricity to send messages. This was made possible by using an encoded messages or special codes that are now known as the Morse Codes.
The codes were consisted of dash and dashes that represents the letters of the alphabet. The dot and dashes were made by making and breaking the transmitter circuit, the pulse of the current will then deflects an electromagnet which will eventually move the marker. As the marker moves, the marker produced codes that are written on the paper. The marking system was being modified to emboss papers with dots and dashes in the following years.
Further, the telegraph technology was developed in the way of sending by air and receiving by air. This process is done through sending electric signals to the receiver’s end through the wires. A sounder is used to be able to convert received signals to sound.
The use of the telegraphed was considered as the rapid form of long distance communication until the year 1877.
