This gave me reason to feel a happiness inside because I don’t like the thoughts of a colonoscopy…it gives me the willies. A Fox News report has indicated that a camera-in-a-pill whose maker is Given Imaging has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration clearance for a pill to provide a visualization of the colon. There is a global market of 3 million procedures currently being done per year.
The Israel medical device maker has indicated “the pill” is called the PillCam Colon, and it can be used for detection of colon polyps in patients who have received an incomplete optical colonoscopy.
Given Imaging indicates 750,000 patients in the United States experience an incomplete colonoscopy every year; and they often have to incur additional costs and the people must undergo other inconvenient and risky procedures to complete a colorectal examination.
Given Imaging is a developer of technology for visualizing, diagnosing and monitoring the digestive system; and it also includes the PillCam, which is a swallowed capsule endoscope a person can swallow.
I’m certainly going to ask my internist doctor about having this test done as soon as it is available for patients use. I would much rather swallow a pill than to go through a colonoscopy, if the same results can be diagnosed.
Medical device maker Covidien PLC indicated in December 2013 it would acquire Given Imaging for $860 million, and the transaction is expected to be completed by March 31, 2014.
I love to write about “new inventions” that will be available for those patients who are in need of a medical diagnosis. ..It’s exciting and rewarding to those who are in need.
