While sitting in a bus terminal and waiting for the 9 o’clock office opening of a telephone company, a young couple arrived with their bags hanging on their shoulders. The couple sat in one of the benches of the terminal. At first, I noticed that they’re having hand gestures thinking that the couple was only poking fun with each other. But later on I realized that the young couple is handicapped; both are deaf. The sweetness of their gestures could be seen on their own language, the sign language which is the medium of all hearing impaired persons. Their sweetness continued as I interestingly looked at the couple with amazement on my part. Maybe they’re just lucky to be deaf and not to hear the imperfection of this noisy and complex world. The couple seemed not bothered about their surroundings. I could see in their eyes that they are a happy young couple united by love and respect for each other. It was already 8 when the bus driver called the attention of all the passengers to get inside the bus. I was thinking that the two would go inside the bus, but the woman walked away toward the bus leaving the young man standing right beside the terminal. The couple bid goodbyes to each other as the woman approaches the bus with reluctance on her face. Their hand gestures were full of emotions as they communicate in sign language. As much as they exchanges in sign language, I can see in their faces and hand gestures that they love each other. I couldn’t help but express my admiration to the young couple because; despite of having hearing disabilities their life is full of hope and promises. Considerably, the young couple represents the reality and the importance of life even if life itself has its defects. Perhaps their world is silent but they can hear love loud and clear.
