With less than 100 days until Christmas, the holiday season is officially upon us. While the holidays are filled with family, joy and festivities, it is also a stress trigger. According to the American Psychological Association, 38% of people feel that their stress increases, rather than decreases, during the holiday season. With the increase in stress, many people across the country experience acne breakouts. Crystal Wellman, master aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic, recommends 5 tips to decrease your anxiety during the holidays.
“Everyone feels some stress during the holidays, whether it’s buying presents, hosting a party or visiting relatives,” affirms Crystal Wellman, master aesthetician and owner of Crystal Clear Acne Clinic. “Stress increases cortisol in the body, which can then increase oil production. If you already have a clogged pore, the increase in oil production is a recipe for disaster.”
Crystal Clear Acne Clinic recommends following these 5 tips to maintain your health and decrease your acne breakouts during this holiday season:
· Sleep. The holidays can disrupt your sleep schedule due to late parties, staying with family or last minute shopping. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time in the mornings. Also, make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark, and relaxing environment.
· Exercise. Don’t let your normal exercise routine fall by the wayside. It’s important to maintain your health by exercising regularly, especially when your stress increases. Wellman recommends yoga, biking or swimming to relieve stress in the body.
· Time-Out. Take time for yourself. Find out what your individual stress trigger is and how to take “time out” from the activity, like turning off your phone or email.
· Procrastinate. Waiting until right before deadlines to do your big homework or work project will cause an increase in stress and acne breakouts! Plan ahead and prioritize your time.
· Nutritious Foods. Big, full meals are typical during the holiday season. However, it’s important to remember that fast foods and empty calorie meals cause inflammation and stress in the body.
“The goal is not to completely avoid stress because it’s inevitable, but to decrease your stress to remain healthy and avoid those pesky breakouts,” affirms Wellman. “By eating right, sleeping and exercising, you can maintain your health even with all the chaos that surrounds the holidays.”
