This unusual daily happening in a Buddhist Temple in Japan would interest anybody whether as an animal lover or believer of god irrespective gender, age, caste and creed.
A dog by name ‘Conan’ has become a popular attraction because of its capability to imitate worshipers around him. This happens day-in-day out in a Jignein Temple on the Southern Islands of Okinawa.
Clasping hands is a basic action of Buddist prayers to show appreciation. Conan starts to pose exactly the same-way (Pls see image) as them, maybe to show his appreciation for treats and walks.
This two year old male with long, black hair and brown collar sits next to Mr.Yoshikuni, the priest at the temple, looks right up at the statute of Buddhist Deity. When the priest starts chanting and raises his clasped hands, Conan also raises his paws and joins them at the tip of his nose. He gets angry when somebody else sits on his favorite spot. According to the priest, it could be because of his thinking that he has to offer the prayers only from his designated place.
The temple pet has become so popular that people come in to take pictures almost every week. Mr.Yoshikunni estimates an increase of at least 30% in the inflow of visitors especially the younger generation.
That is good news for the dog, the temple and the older generation who feel that the younger ones are losing their faith in religion.
