More than 1,000 chickens have died suddenly in Tankisinuwari of Morang district. The news came just after the completion of culling of poultry in Jhapa to control bird-flu. Previously, the government had culled chickens in Sharanamati VDC of Jhapa after Bird Flu was found in the region. Before bird flu was tested positive, 150 chickens had died suddenly. The deadly bird flu virus was also detected in Kakarbhitta in January. They had killed some 28,000 chickens in the area.
After testing the dead chickens in Tankisinuwari, Morang, the Regional Animal Disease Diagnosis Laboratory (RADDL) in Biratnagar said that the initial test have proved negative to H5N1 virus. They have collected samples of the dead chickens for further investigation in Kathmandu. Before this, the positive results had appeared only after testing in London.
Meanwhile, the people of Nepal have not completely stopped eating chicken and poultry products. In villages and cities alike, people don’t think twice before cutting a pigeon or a fowl or a duck. But still businesses selling poultry products/meat has sharply gone down. It is likely that the H5N1 virus spreads to human beings if proper campaigns are not undertaken.
‘The chickens started salivating and had swollen heads before they died. The locals are scared of a bird-flu outbreak with flocks of chicken dying.’ Nepalnews.com reported.
