To fight off against the shortage of food, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said that his administration has purchased maize to fight off hunger. This comes before the run-off election that comes on June 27. Morgan Tsvangirai, the leader for the Movement of Democratic Change (MDC) had won the elections. However, he did not win enough to avoid the run-off election.
In the past, Zimbabwe’s agriculture industry was booming. However, the country now suffers from shortages of food. Many critics have blamed Mugabe’s administration for mishandling the land. To make matters worse, Zimbabwe has the highest inflation in the world.
In regards to the run-off election, Mugabe’s administration has been criticized for withholding results. The top US diplomat to Africa, Jindayi Frazer, said that Tsvangirai won the elections. Frazer also accused Mugabe of trying to steal the elections.
However, Mugabe brushed off all criticisms. He said that there was a Western plot to remove him from power.
Mugabe has blamed the violence in Zimbabwe on the MDC. However, the United Nations (UN) and various human rights groups blame Mugabe’s Zanu-PF Party for starting most of the violence.
Previously, Mugabe’s wife, Grace Mugabe weighed in. Grace Mugabe said that Tsvangirai will never be allowed to take power. She said it would not matter if Tsvangirai won the run-off election.
While Robert Mugabe is blamed for the struggling economy of Zimbabwe, it seems that many feel that Grace is the one pulling the strings. Many blame Grace for manipulating Robert Mugabe.
