Three traffic police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were gunned down by some unidentified armed assailants in Killi Ismail on Thursday.
Police said the deceased – Sub-Inspector Abdul Latif and Constables Bashir and Muhammad Ayub – were going to their duties when some unknown armed assailants showered bullets on them. Abdul Latif died on the spot while Bashir and Muhammad Ayub were brought to the Civil Hospital in critical condition, where they died due to excessive bleeding and multiple wounds.
Some policemen alleged that they died as they were not provided timely medical assistance because the necessary medical staff was not available in the Casualty Department of the hospital.
On receiving information, a large number of traffic police personnel from different points gathered outside the Civil Hospital, and blocked the Jinnah Road for some time to protest the delay in providing medical treatment to their injured colleagues.
Moving scenes were witnessed on the occasion as some traffic police personnel were seen crying over the brutal killings of their colleagues.
A protesting traffic policeman asked why they were being targeted as they were serving the masses.
Meanwhile, the Namaz-e-Janaza of the deceased was offered at the Police Lines the same afternoon.
Inspector General of Police Saud Gohar, Provincial Home Secretary Furqan Bahadur, DIG (Operation) Rahmatullah Niazi, other police high-ups, officers and a large number of personnel of different law-enforcement agencies attended the funeral. Later, their bodies were sent to their ancestral towns for burial.
