al-quida in Islamic North Africa, an affiliate of al-quida claimed the responisibility for the latest attack. Islamic Insurgency broke in Algiers as early as 1990 when the Army cancelled the secound round of country’s first multiparty elections to prevent likely victory by an Islamic Fundamentalistic Party. This has resulted in the killing of more than 2,00,000 (Two Lakh) people and the violence still goes unabated if at all with a renewed vigor. There appeared to e a dying down of the insurgency in between through a combination of military attacks and amnesty offers, but, this trend seems to have been bucked by the Islamic fighers who are regrouping in the Country. And the emergence of GSPC in late 2006 seem to tbe an offshoot of this trend. This outfit indulges in large-scale bombings and targets foreigners also.
